Our Simonstown self-catering holiday home makes the ideal base from which to explore the Cape. We decided to call our holiday home Craig na Mara (or Hill by the Sea) because of its location. Built over a hundred years ago when Simonstown was home to the British Navy, the house is now the base for many happy visits to the Cape. For those who have never been before, you are in for a treat – and welcome back to those who have fallen for the place like we did. For cricket fans, Newlands cricket ground is an easy half-hour drive away in Cape Town. The
accommodation is comfortably decorated and spacious (400 m2), with
high wooden ceilings, 2 original fireplaces, sash windows and wooden
flooring throughout. It consists of: The house is in a prime part of Simonstown’s historic quarter. The views from both patio and balcony are breathtaking, and watching the sun go down over False Bay is one of the pleasures of life. The famous Boulders Beach penguins are only a walk away, you can see whales calve in season (October-December) and you get plenty of African wildlife at the Cape Point nature reserve, a short drive away.
Simonstown itself has plenty shops and restaurants, a busy sailing harbour and a golf course. There are several lovely beaches only minutes away, perfect for families and swimming, all with warm Indian Ocean waters, all several degrees warmer than the Atlantic coastline. Airport: Cape Town airport is 45 minutes away, and all main car rental companies have offices at the airport. Touring is recommended, with Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Table Mountain, Stellenbosch wine route, V&A Waterfront, and Rotunga Junction theme park (excellent fun, and that’s just for the adults!) our personal favourites. Not forgetting the boat trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 25 years of his life. Never been before? The Cape summer is October to April, and you can normally expect lovely dry heat up to 28 degrees November through March. Winter days can be very pleasant, with temperatures averaging 15/18 degrees. Fly direct (Virgin/BA/SAA) and at night if you can, and the 12 hour journey goes faster. Flights fill up early and discounts are unusual so plan well ahead. The bargains come once you arrive. Leather goods, African art, local wine/beer and eating out are all great value. And in Cape Town traffic is light, everyone drives on the right hand side and the common language is English. If you fancy a treat, take afternoon tea for £10 at the Mount Nelson Hotel. |
