The little Istrian town of Lovran is located in an ambience characterized by the blue of the sea and the green slopes of Mt Učka. Until the 19th century, it was a city renowned for its maritime past and a picturesque medieval centre. At the beginning of the 20th century, it turned into a fashionable place and winter resort for the Austro-Hungarian gentry. The name Lovran derives from the word lovor, or laurel, whose freshness gives the place a particular charm. The Romans decked their heroes with laurel, and according to one legend, Lovran was created when the Roman patrician Marcus Agrippa, in the first century AD, built his summer residence on the site of today's Lovran town. Agrippa had the whole world to choose from, yet he picked Lovran. And there is no wonder. In the next twenty centuries, people from all over the world came and returned to Lovran, enthralled by the marvelous combination of sea and mountain, cityscape and landscape, past and present.

You can visit the historic old-town of Lovran or entertain your selves in various shops, café’s, open market-place, bakeries, restaurants and sport possibilities. Traditional manifestations that draw numerous visitors to Lovran, pointing out its connection with the rich, fruitful surrounding nature are “Wild Asparagus days” in the spring, “Cherry festival” in the summer and “Chestnut festivity” locally known as Marunada in the fall.

Built by master-builder Attilio Maguolo at the beginning of the 20th century, Villa Astra was renovated in 2003, with harmonious colors, rich fabrics and a romantic blend of charming old elegance and contemporary comfort. It is surrounded by a garden with palms, laurels and oaks as a perfect example of Venetian floral Gothic architecture. Situated at the beautiful location by the sea, with magnificent view of the Kvarner bay, the villa can be reached by 5 minutes walk from the center of Lovran. Villa has a direct access to the seaside promenade "Lungomare“ and  features 6 guest rooms, an intimate gourmet restaurant, reception with the aperitif bar, a heated, outdoor swimming pool, open-bar, wellness area and parking spaces for its guests.

Restaurant 'Villa Astra' is restored in the spirit of the golden era of Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, offering creative cooking adjusted to the new culinary criteria, with continental and Mediterranean spices in inviting, fresh, regional, seasonal and healthy food offer. Rich selection of Croatian and foreign wines completes the pleasure. Restaurant has three dining rooms; Austrian, Croatian and Hungarian Room and its interior decoration was dedicated to the era of the Austrian Emperor – Franz Joseph, emphasized by his three portraits.
