Tomar has a lot to offer besides its quaint cobblestone streets, tiny shops reminiscent of days gone by, a refreshing river running through the central park with its Roman water wheel that irrigates the gardens, numerous cafes and cake shops – the Portuguese do have a sweet tooth – and all the modern conveniences that we now take for granted. Tomar is in the centre of Portugal so you are ideally placed to visit, not just the historic headquarters of the Knights Templars who initiated the discovery of the Americas, but also take advantage of the road and rail networks to explore the pilgrimage town of Fatima, the University town of Coimbra, Porto and its port houses, Lisbon, both the town and the national exhibition centre with its magnificent Oceanarium, and a whole region of castles, caves, dinosaur footprints, lakes, watersports and rural tranquillity.

In the area generally there are rivers, mountains, castles, potteries, pastries, vineyards and history. A good friend has a vineyard that guests enjoy visiting, not just to see and sample the wines, but to see how the classic olive presses worked and to enjoy some of the local produce.

The House: is a typical Portuguese property, in a tiny rural village, where relaxation is almost completely unavoidable. The house has two bedrooms, one with double bed, the other with bunk beds and the lounge has a wood-burning stove for the winter and leads onto a secluded patio with its own swimming pool. The kitchen is fitted with a traditional cooker, washing machine, fridge and all the pots, pans and crockery you need for self catering; that is if you can resist eating out at one of the local restaurants where the food is excellent and the price is very friendly. Fresh bread is delivered daily (except Sunday) and fresh fish, fruit and vegetables can also be bought from travelling vendors during the week.
